Best answer:
Answer by Shadows of the storm
it comes from the ancient gaels of Ireland and Scotland possible older breton, gaul or melissian symbols most likely pagan in which it was is in some ways refered to as a witches knot e.g Celtic trinity which is said to ward off evil spirits and yes its Celtic as it is written and recorded in the book of Kells in trinity college dublin with Celtic knotwork dating back to 806 when it had to be moved to ireland from scotland due to viking raids on monasterys so its not a viking symbol nor any other race because no other race from europe match the description of these people and their symbols as roman and greek scribes write what the celts looked like and their symbols and weapons/cloths brooches, leines, tunics, torcs

The use of interlace patterns had its origins in the art work of the late Roman Empire and first appeared in the third and fourth centuries AD, and can be seen in Roman floor mosaics.
The style is most commonly associated with the Celtics, but it was also practiced extensively in England and was exported to Europe by Irish and Northumbrian monastic activities on the continent. In modern times Celtic Art is popularly thought of in terms of national identity and therefore specifically Irish, Scottish or Welsh.
Some Wiccans have taken up the creation of celtic knots, attributing to them ideas and magical properties that may not have been there originally.
It also has romantic links, suggesting that the knots are never ending, as the matters of the heart.
