Question by Nest: Does the ying yang have any history in Celtic culture?
I’ve been looking up Celtic tattoo designs and i keep seeing Ying/Yang symbols meshed in with Celtic knot work. I’m wondering if the ying yang has any meaning in Celtic history?

Nope. Yin Yang is strictly a far east thing. It’s probably a coincidence; I think a similar pattern is popular in Celtic knotwork, but the two aren’t related.

This was an illuminated manuscript commissioned by the Duke of Berry in 1410.

It is sufficiently well known and important that it should be easy to find plenty of info on.

Question by Blade: how much would a northern european history professor make?
im working towards a PhD in Northern European History(vikings, celts, etc.). Ive always wanted to be a professor, since i was 4 years old and met an art history professor. I would like to ideally be a full time professor, writing books and teaching Northern European History. Ive heard that a full time professor(not lecturer or teaching assistant) makes no less than 6 figures, but id like to have more input on this. Thanks in advance.

The American term ‘professor’ equates to ‘university lecturer’ in Britain. Only senior heads of department and Chairs are awarded the title ‘Professor’ in British universities.

Question by needzhelpz2344: Art History question about Greeks, Celts, Etruscans and Romans!!?
It could be argued that naturalism–the ability to depict anatomically correct bodies moving believably in space—was the quality Greeks valued most in their own art. Naturalism was not always, however, what the Greeks’ neighbors found most appealing about Greek Art. Analyzes the different responses that Greek Art elicited from the Celts, Etruscans, and Romans.

Most simple answer is Romans: Copied it. Many greek statues are only rememberd because we found roman copies of them.

The earliest is of a cat playing bagpipes from a 9th century high cross. The rest are all contemporary images of Irish pipers in the 1500s. Some are modern interpretations based on the early images, and the photos are of myself in Gaelic attire of the 1500s. The last few pics are of a 2 droned Irish war pipe I constructed myself to the best of my ability. More on the website!!

The Celtic cross is a cross whose four “arms” are intersected by a central, circular ring – a function of both structural form and symbolism.  While the roots of the Celtic Cross are likely in Paganism with the ring symbolizing the sun and “renewal,” it has become a potent symbol of Christianity and Irish heritage. The roots of the Celtic Cross can be traced back to Prehistoric Europe where the “sun cross” – a circle with an “x” or cross shape scratched inside began to appear on cave drawings and burial sites.  The image persisted through the Bronze and Iron ages evolving into the Celtic Cross.  It’s likely that the “cross” symbolized North, South, East and West.

Designed and built by Mary Watts, the Chapel is a unique fusion of art nouveau, Celtic, Romanesque and Egyptian influence with Mary’s own original style.

As followers of the Home Arts and Industries Association, set up by Earl Brownlow in 1885 to encourage handicrafts among the lower classes, the Chapel was the Watts’s contribution to this characteristically Victorian preoccupation with social improvement through creative enlightenment. Mary passionately believed that anyone with a real interest and enthusiasm could be taught how to produce beautiful decoration, if in the process it kept them away from the ‘gin palaces’ of Guildford, this was surely a good thing. With this belief firmly in mind she encouraged all from the village, whatever their social status, up to their house Limnerslease for instruction in clay modelling.
